‘Have you ever seen sunlight beaming through the trees in the forest?

Or saw the rainbow reflected in the wings of a dragonfly?

Or heard water trickling over rocks and thought:

How magical is this world we live in?

That is the type of magic Joni captures in her work.

It is gentle, sweet and whimsical but majestic and awe inspiring at the same time.’

Arthropodic Collection

Definition: Pertaining to arthropods. An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton (external skeleton), a segmented body, and paired jointed appendages. Arthropods form the phylum Euarthropoda, which includes insects, arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans.

The Arthropodic collection takes its inspiration from insects, be it their wing shapes, their wonderful iridescent colours, or literal bees on a corset all can be the starting point for a magical garment. We use modern techniques and materials such as laser cutting and iridescent synthetics, and combine them with hand-dyed silks, organic shapes, and bead-embellishment to create something luxurious and beautiful.

Iridescent Otherworldy Fae

Alien vs Mantis

This design was the winner of the 2018 Foundations Revealed competition. The theme of the competition was 'insects'.

'The insect theme lends itself well to both a light and dark interpretation, as they are both beautiful and scary (to some). This duality is what I tried to capture in this design. My main inspiration source was the praying mantis. Furthermore, I was inspired by the beautiful shapes and iridescent colours of butterflies and beetles. I tried to strike a balance between beauty and darkness in this piece.

Imagine if you scaled a praying mantis up to the size of a human-- would that not look downright alien to us? Not to mention positively terrifying!'

‘Joni, you are a legend. You had a practice run at this last year, and it was freaking awesome, but now you’re doing insects like you’re not taking prisoners! I love it!’
